Civic Leadership Academy

Since 2004, the Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) has helped to develop the leadership skills of government and nonprofit professionals through practical workshops that address your needs. With topics ranging from public speaking to contract negotiation, from stormwater management to grant writing, you’ll build a well-rounded body of knowledge.

Customized Training

The CGS training team includes subject matter experts, experienced instructors and talented faculty partners that can design and deliver high-quality training programs for your organization.  Our trainers are ready to work with you on a wide variety of training programs for your organization, from one-day seminars to multi-session/multi-month curriculums. Examples of programs CGS has designed and delivered include:

  • Internal staff development academies.
  • Skill building programs to augment succession planning.
  • Timely single-topic sessions on current trends or high-interest topics.
  • Multi-jurisdictional training programs for both groups of municipalities and municipal/special district collaborations.

Illinois Financial Forecast Forum

The Illinois City/County Management Association, Illinois Government Finance Officers Association, American Planning Association – IL Chapter and the NIU Center for Governmental Studies present the Annual Illinois Financial Forecast Forum each January. This conference gives public sector leaders a chance to get up-to-date information about financial and economic issues affecting Illinois communities. Participants have the opportunity to earn CEU, CPE and CM credits.

Illinois Township Management Academy

Each year, the NIU Department of Public Administration and Center for Governmental Studies partner with the Illinois Association of Township Administrators to offer a professional development program for township officials who seek to enhance their management skills. The Illinois Township Management Academy typically consists of four sessions held at NIU Naperville.

Midwest Leadership Institute

The Midwest Leadership Institute is based on the premise that to be a successful leader in local government, one must have a deep understanding of interpersonal relationships and individual and organizational behavior. Through deep, customized learning focused on real-world local government scenarios, the institute builds good judgment, self-awareness, ethics and other essential leadership qualities.
